Bristol man acquitted of raping sleeping woman in Sydney, Australia, following retrial

A Bristol man who spent nearly two years in jail on allegations of raping a woman in Australia has been acquitted following a retrial.

Scott Richardson, 27, had previously been accused of attacking a 23-year-old American woman while she slept in a property in Sydney on December 12, 2015.

He denied the allegations but ended up being found guilty a year later and was ordered to serve at least two years and three months in prison, according to the Daily Mirror.

However, Mr Richardson had his conviction quashed last year after an appeal court heard new DNA evidence had come to light.

On Thursday (March 28), a jury at Sydney's Downing Centre court returned verdicts of not guilty on two counts of sexual intercourse without consent following the retrial.

Mr Richardson had spent more than 21 months in jail before his conviction was overturned.

The judges heard that DNA tests using a more advanced method than that used during his trial had found profiles of two men, rather than one.
