Bristol Light Festival returning for 2021 - and they are looking for artists

It was the one major Bristol event which actually did happen in 2020 - and wowed thousands of people in the streets of the city centre just before the coronavirus lockdown took hold.

It was the end of February and into early March when crowds of people toured around the city centre, from Castle Park to Park Street, to see stunning light installations that glowed in the late winter night.

That was only six months ago and was the first, and last, major event in Bristol's soon-to-be-wiped calendar for 2020.

Now the organisers have confirmed the Bristol Light Festival will definitely return in 2021, and they have begun their search for artists and ideas to bring to the city early next year.

The 'artist call-out' for 2021 is live and applications are being accepted to get involved until September 16, with shortlisted submissions by October 5. The event is expected to take place in February next year.

"We'd love to hear from artists and makers of any discipline interested in working with light as a creative medium in Bristol City Centre; designers, makers, architects, light artists, students and institutions are invited to submit expressions of interest about existing works they’d like to showcase, or new ideas of playful ways to light up our city," said the bid lead Vicky Lee.

"We are particularly interested in hearing about existing works or new ideas exploring light, projects which use technology in innovative ways to encourage play and exploration, sustainable light art which uses green energy solutions, projects that can work with social distancing measures in place and from artists who have a relationship with Bristol.

"Your ideas don’t have to address all of these elements, and it’s okay if you don’t know all the detail of how to make them happen yet," she added.

The first Bristol Light Festival included a steam and light show across Castle Bridge, light installations in Castle Park and Quaker's Friar, a projected light show on Banksy's 'Well Hung Lover' street art in Park Street, and illuminated see-saws in Queen Square.

One of the light installations, a giant neon 'Cheers Drive' sign next to the Cascade Steps, was permanently installed at Bristol Bus Station last month, to thank the city's bus drivers and all the city's keyworkers.
