Bristol Light Festival 2020 opens with stunning projection on Park Street Banksy

Bristol Light Festival got under way in style last night (February 27), with eight different installations illuminating the city centre.

Taking place for the first time ever, the festival features installations from renowned light artists as well as local talent.

One of the highlights of the event is a digital projection created by four Bristol-based artists dubbed Neighbours, which overlays Banksy's Well Hung Lover  at the bottom of Park Street.

The four graffiti artists and illustrators were commissioned specially for the festival to imagine what might be happening in the windows neighbouring the iconic scene, set across three floors.

Renowned street artist Inkie and illustrators Jasmine Thompson, Zoë Power Parys Gardener have all put their own spin on the piece, which will be on show until the end of the festival on Sunday evening.

Inkie, whose real name is Tom Bingle, explained the inspiration for his piece.

He said: "There was a gas explosion at the bottom of Park Street in the the 70s when I was a kid and the whole building blew up, so my piece is a nod to that.

"The bottom floor is a crime scene, on the second floor there's a paint factory next to Banksy's piece and the top floor is a nod to the sexual health clinic located behind Banksy's piece.

"I think they've done a really good job with it and it's great seeing it lit up for the first time. This event is a great addition to Bristol."

Other light installations can be found at Castle Bridge, Cascade Steps, Queen Square, Park Street, College Green, Quakers Friars and Millennium Square.

This is the first of a three-year series brought to the city by Bristol City Centre Business Improvement District (BID), in partnership with Bristol City Council and the Digital Cultures Research Centre at the University of the West of England.

The festival is being delivered, curated and produced by Bristol based creative directors Katherine Jewkes and Vashti Waite.
