Workers took shelter at the Esso garage after a knife-wielding man stormed the shop.

Avon and Somerset Police said: “We have detained a man in connection with an incident at a petrol station on Hengrove Way this morning. Investigations at the scene continue.”

One person was taken to hospital after leaving the garage in Hengrove Way, the force said.

Loud bangs and flashes of light from inside the petrol station were witnessed from the street, Hits Radio Bristol News reports.

Earlier, armed police and a negotiator had been called.

The force said: "Police are at the scene of an incident which has led to the closure of Hengrove Way, Bristol, today, Thursday 9 September.

"Staff members are uninjured within a safe room and in contact with officers.

"One person has left the scene and gone to hospital with injuries not believed life-threatening.

"Armed officers and a negotiator have been deployed to try to bring the incident to a safe conclusion.

"Members of the public are urged to avoid the area."

Officers were called shortly after 7.30am and arrived at the scene within five minutes.
