Bristol incident causes traffic 'gridlock' in city centre - police statement

Roads in Bristol's Old Market area were closed this afternoon due to a concern for welfare incident.

An Avon and Somerset police spokesman said the incident involved a man who is now safe.

The spokesman told Bristol Live : "We became aware of the incident at around 12.45pm today (July 31).

"As a precaution, a number of roads around the Old Market area were closed. The male is now safe and roads reopened at about 3pm."

According to reports on social media, there was a heavy presence of police and emergency vehicles in the area at 2.25pm, with no access to Old Market.

"Gridlock" reportedly stretched to Bristol Temple Meads station and through much of the city centre.
