Bristol has almost 580 confirmed coronavirus cases as UK deaths continue to surge

Bristol now has 576 confirmed cases of coronavirus after a rise of five positive tests in one day.

But experts believe the city's real figure could be in the thousands as the government has only been testing the most severe patients.

While in South Gloucestershire, 12 more people tested positive for Covid-19 in the past 24 hours, bringing the district's total to 333.

Public Health England's figures released today (Monday, April 27), showed North Somerset has 210 cases after five more positive tests.

Coronavirus-related hospital deaths in Bristol have risen to 145 following the deaths of 22 people over the past week.

And across the UK, the death toll has peaked at 21,092 as Prime Minster Boris Johnson warned the public now is not the time to ease lockdown rules.

Scientists advising the government have warned any relaxation of the lockdown risks a renewed flare up just as the numbers of patients in hospital with the disease is beginning to fall.

In the last seven days both B&Q and Costa Coffee have re-opened some of their branches.
