Bristol has 571 confirmed coronavirus cases as minister questions how many lives quicker response could have saved

New figures have revealed Bristol now has 571 confirmed cases of coronavirus following a rise of 12 positive tests in the past 24 hours.

This is lower than yesterday's increase of 16 but it's likely the city's real figure is far higher, possibly in the thousands, as the government has only been testing the most severe patients.

In South Gloucestershire nine more people have tested positive for Covid-19 in the past 24 hours, bringing the district's total to 321, according to the government figures released today (Sunday, April 26).

In Bath and North East Somerset, a further three positive Covid-19 tests were returned, bringing the total to 201.

North Somerset now has 205 cases after a rise of five.

The total number of lab-confirmed cases in the UK has reached 152,840 while the number of deaths recorded in hospitals now stands at 20,732 20,319 marking a daily increase of 413.

A Labour minister has questioned how many lives a quicker response to the coronavirus pandemic could have saved.

Shadow minister for mental health, and A&E worker Dr Rosena Allin-Khan said the Government chose to enter lockdown "too late" and that global advice on self-isolation was not followed.

Dr Allin-Khan added PPE was not delivered to the front line when it was needed and said mass testing and contact tracing should have been rolled out.
