Bristol greets Donald Trump with the sound of farting trumpets

He might have been 120 miles away standing awkwardly with Prince Charles, but the people of Bristol were determined to welcome the President of the USA, Donald Trump, with a cacophony of noise.

While President Trump was meeting the Queen and having tea with the Duchess of Cornwall in London, a protest march led by more than a dozen trumpet players was winding its way through the city centre.

There was no tune, just the drone of trumps emitting from the trumpets as the march left The Centre, went past the city’s cathedral and City Hall, up Park Street and came back down again.

Police stopped the traffic with a rolling roadblock as a couple of hundred protestors solemnly marched behind the most discordant brass band ever to take to the streets of Bristol.

They even had a brass band banner on two poles, with ‘Trumpets Against Trump’ on the front, and ‘Blast Fascism’ on the back.

Last summer, President Trump came and Bristol came out in their thousands - a huge march of 5,000 or more blocked the city centre for almost two hours.

But this time, there were not the numbers to cause a huge amount of disruption, although the signs and home-made placards were still just as witty.

‘Love Trumps Hate’ was a popular one, but one lady really went for the toilet humour of the President’s name. “In this country, Trump means fart, FART, fart,” the banner-cum-essay read.

“Trump the Golden Fart,” it ended, complete with a crude drawing of a bottom emitting Donald Trump’s head as part of a fart.

Bristol’s drivers - those stuck behind the rolling roadblock - were left delayed and cross.

Many Trump supporters for causing delays, pointing out that the President is likely to have more concerns about North Korea and the protest that is planned for London on Tuesday.

Bristol’s Monday protest organisers have arranged several coaches to take Bristolians up to London to take part in that protest.

"We will be taking to the streets opposing Trump's racism, themed areas will feature throughout the protest with climate justice, migrants’ rights, anti-racism, women's rights, LGBT rights, anti-war and trade union rights and many more," said a spokesperson for the protest.

"Theresa May is backing Trump’s toxic politics. It is wrong to give him a state visit. This is a chance to take a stand against right wing ideas on both sides of the Atlantic  .

"Together Against Trump is organised jointly by the Stop Trump Coalition and Stand Up To Trump. It brings together a host of campaign groups and trade unions," he added.
