Bristol gently rocked as earthquake hits West Country with epicentre near M5

Bristol was gently moved by an earthquake which hit the West Country last night.

The earthquake was recorded at a magnitude of 3.2, and the quake’s epicentre was close to the village of Huntworth, in Somerset.

Huntworth is a tiny hamlet with a population of just 50, and is just off the M5 near Bridgwater.

But last night, Thursday, at precisely 10.49pm and 18 seconds to be exact, three miles beneath the ground, the earth moved violently, causing a tremor that was felt as far away as North Somerset and Dorset.

Local residents in Bridgwater reported that ‘the whole house rattled’, while another said: “It was really strong here in North Curry, there was a boom and the house shook, it woke my husband and I.”

A spokesperson for the British Geological Survey said the earthquake was measured at a depth of five kilometers.

“BGS have received several reports of the event being felt in several towns and villages in Somerset,” a spokesperson said.

“Reports described ‘whole house rattled’, ‘physically felt my bed shake’, a ‘low and faint rumble’, and a ‘big rumble and house given a definite shove’, indicating an intensity of at least three EMS,” he added.
