Bristol fountains run dry as heatwave scorches city

Fountains across Bristol are bone dry today (July 18) despite it being the middle of a heatwave that is scorching the city. Pictures from this afternoon show an empty Millennium Square, where the usually popular fountains are fenced off and not running.

There is also no water flowing down Cascade Steps, Victoria Rooms near Clifton and the fountains in the city centre. It is believed that many of the fountains in the city were switched off for the Harbour Festival, as music stages were set up on or nearby them.

Others, such as the fountains in the centre, have been switched off for a number of years.

After one of the hottest weeks of the year, today's temperatures are set to make it one of the hottest days on record. Temperatures have been steadily increasing, making for some hot and sunny weather over what was the Bristol Harbour Festival weekend.

An extreme heat warning has been issued for Bristol that could bring 'danger to life'. The amber weather warning has been regarded as a rare occurrence by the Met Office which reportedly could lead to widespread impacts on people and infrastructure.

The weather forecaster predicts the Bristol region and other parts of England could experience exceptionally high temperatures today - in the region of 36C. Similar levels are expected tomorrow, too, before the mercury drops back down to 24C on Wednesday, where showers are forecast to arrive.
