Bristol Folk Festival is returning after a three-year hiatus

Music lovers in Bristol looking for something to do over the early May bank holiday weekend will be delighted to hear that a festival is returning to the city.

Bristol Folk Festival is taking place for the first time since 2016 between May 3 - 5, bringing more than a dozen acts at the top of their game to venues across the city.

Multi-BBC Folk Award winners Cara Dillon and Kris Drever top the billing, both performing on a special Sunday at St George’s.

Alongside them on the lineup are a host of rising stars from the UK folk scene, including Lady Maisery, Sam Kelly and the Lost Boys and Grace Petrie.

The main musical showcases take place around Park Street, with performances on Friday and Saturday at Bristol Folk House and Saint Stephen’s Church and on Sunday at St George’s.

Bristol Folk Festival is brought to the city by a new team including Bristol Festivals chair and founder of Bristol Pride, Dr Anna Rutherford, along with national folk promoter and founder of Downend Folk Club Ant Miles.

The lineup has been curated to reflect the changing face of the UK folk scene and includes BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award nominees Cohen Braithwaite-Kilcoyne and The Drystones, as well as local favourites Spiro, Rachel Dadd, Amadou Diagne, The Longest Johns and Bristol Folk Singers.

Dr Rutherford said: ”The West Country has always been a hotbed for folk talent and Bristol Folk Festival invites some of our brightest stars to share the stage with the world’s best musicians

“As programmers, we’re excited by the folk artists speaking for a new generation - Grace Petrie, Lady Maisery, Sam Kelly - but in these divisive times, we’re also passionate about the unifying power of music.

“Whatever your background, folk is about finding common ground, and it is such a brilliant antidote to our high-stress, plugged-in lives.”
