Bristol fire: Police go door-to-door after flames engulf car

Police officers are trawling through CCTV footage and going door-to-door after a suspicious fire in Bristol.

Flames engulfed a car in Lawrence Weston last night (Wednesday, February 24), with thick smoke seen spewing from the burning vehicle at about 8.30pm.

Avon and Somerset Police has now launched an investigation, although the force did not explicitly state if the fire is being treated as a suspected arson.

A police spokesperson said: "We were made aware of a car fire at about 8.30pm last night in the Long Cross area of Lawrence Weston.

"An investigation is underway. CCTV and house-to-house enquiries are being carried out.

"We’d ask any witnesses to call 101 and give reference number 5221040591.”

Residents said the blaze happened near Longcross Garage.

Images shared with Bristol Live show smoke pouring out from the burning car as a firefighter hoses it down.

A video from the scene appears to record a large banging noise as the flames rip through the vehicle, just before the sound of sirens in the distance.

A spokesperson for Avon Fire and Rescue Service said: "One Firefighter in BA [breathing apparatus] kit used a high pressure hose to dampen down the fire.

"Police were also in attendance."
