Bristol families to remember lives lost to addiction as drug deaths rise

Bristol families will come together to remember the lives of loved-ones lost to addiction as drug-related deaths continue to rise in the city .

A memorial will be held at St James Priory on November 30, which will allow family members to hear readings and personal stories from those affected.

This year's event comes after recent figures revealed a record high number of drug-related deaths in Bristol.

Some 95 people died between 2016 and 2018 as a result of drug misuse, according to figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

This is compared to 69 deaths in the two-year period from 2001 to 2003.

What happens if you suspect someone is having a drug overdose

The city's drug problem is part of a wider issue across the country, with ONS figures showing the highest annual increase in drug-related deaths since records began.

The memorial has been organised by Bereavement Through Addiction, a support network launched by parents Joan and Paul who lost a child as a result of addiction in 2008.

"If someone dies from cancer or an accident, whole families and friends are offered counselling and support. We had nothing and felt ostracised in our community," they said in a statement.

'We would gladly have the chaos and pain back'

"Some people suggested 'aren't you relieved it is all over'.

"In fact, we would gladly have the chaos and pain back, to have him alive and still have hope of his recovery."

The event will feature a range of readings and personal stories, as well as a performance by Bristol's Recovery Choir, which features members affected by alcohol and other drugs.
