Bristol Energy launches green tariffs as city approaches carbon neutral target

Bristol Energy has launched three new green products as the city enters the 10-year countdown to its 2030 carbon neutral target .

The energy supplier is offering 100% green electricity and lower carbon gas tariffs which are largely powered by local wind and solar farms .

BE Simply Green, BE Super Green and Big Issue Super Green will now be the only tariffs available to new customers.

The BE Super Green and Big Issue Super Green products’ green electricity is sourced directly from UK generators, with 100% gas carbon offsets.

The company say the green tariffs will help support Bristol City Council's ambition for the city to become carbon neutral by 2030.

The news comes as Bristol Live launches its #Do1Thing campaign, which aims to get everyone in Bristol making small changes to their lives to help combat climate change.

Marek Majewicz, managing director at Bristol Energy, said: “As we enter a new decade, 2020 is a significant year for Bristol Energy.

"We’ve now hit the 10-year countdown to Bristol’s carbon neutral target of 2030.

What will the climate look like in your lifetime?

“We are pleased to now only offer green products to new customers, encouraging green energy and supporting local renewable generators across wind, solar, hydro and bio.

"By sourcing electricity directly from renewable generators, we’re committing to supporting local businesses and communities who generate renewable power, by giving them a route to market and a good price for the power they sell.

“Our new products encourage customers to go green and do their bit for the planet. My message to everyone in Bristol is switch to Bristol Energy and support our city to become a cleaner, greener, healthier place to live.”

The council backed a commitment to be carbon neutral by 2030 after declaring a "climate emergency" in 2018.

The decision followed a IPCC report which warned that humanity has 12 years to take emergency action in order to prevent global warming greater than 1.5°C.

Above this, the risks to humanity of floods, droughts, extreme heat and poverty become much greater, impacting on hundreds of millions more people.

For every switch, Bristol Energy will put aside £20 towards environmental and social projects, such as the One Tree per Child tree planting scheme in Bristol.
