Bristol East 2019 General Election results: Kerry McCarthy holds seat for Labour

The Labour Party have held onto the fairly safe seat of Bristol East while suffering heavy losses elsewhere in the country.

It was the fifth consecutive victory for Kerry McCarthy, who was first elected as a Member of Parliament for the constituency in 2005.

This time round she received 27,717 votes, decreasing her majority to 10,794 from 13,394 in 2017.

In second place was the Conservative Party's Sarah Codling with 16,923 votes.

She was followed by Nicholas Coombes for the Liberal Democrats with 3,527 votes.

Voters headed to the polls yesterday (December 12) to vote in the third general election this country has seen in the last five years.

Overall turnout for Bristol East was 70.8 per cent, up from 70.2 per cent in 2017.

While Labour have suffered heavy losses to the Conservatives across the country, all four seats in Bristol have remained red.

Reacting to her win, McCarthy said: "I'm pleased in Bristol we've managed to keep all four seats Labour.

"I will never take Bristol East for granted.

"It's not really a time to be triumphant but lets just say I'm really pleased and will do all I can to carry on serving the people of Bristol East for another four or five years."

Speaking to Bristol Live, Kerry McCarthy offered her thoughts on Jeremy Corbyn's position as Labour leader.

"I don't think he should fight another election," she said. "He should share some of the responsibility for this election."

Corbyn has already announced that he will not lead Labour into another general election and went on to call for a "process of reflection" in his party.

Here are the full results from Bristol East:

Kerry McCarthy (Labour): 27,717

Sarah Codling (Conservative): 16,923

Nicholas Coombes (Liberal Democrat): 3,527

Conan Connolly (Greens): 2,106
