Bristol distillery launches whiskey after three-year barrelling process in US and UK

A Bristol distillery is launching its own brand of double-barrelled whiskey this weekend following a three-year process which involved shipping the spirit from America.

The Bristol Distilling Company will release the first batch of J Black’s Double Barrel whiskey on Saturday, November 13, at its distillery in Bedminster.

The two-year-old Straight Bourbon Whiskey originates from “Whiskey City” itself in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, which was then brought to Bristol and re-barrelled in a charred 90L American White Oak barrel for a further year.

Founder of The Bristol Distilling Company, Jake Black, said: “I’m not aware of any other whiskey aged in two new oak barrels on both sides of the Atlantic before.

“This is a truly unique and exciting project we’ve been working on for a long time and can't wait to now be able to share it.”

The owner explained the importance of the extended maturation process, which enhances the flavour of the rich, spicy and bold high-rye bourbon-style whiskey and gathers the notes of vanilla, raisins and caramelised sugar.

Thanks to the three-year re-barrelling process, J Black’s Double Barrel can now officially be classified as whiskey according to UK requirements.

Jake revealed the process has also been the inspiration behind the name of his new bar, Double Barrel Bar, which opened on St Nicholas Street in September.

The venue, formerly the steakhouse Chomp, boasts the largest collection of American whiskey in the whole of the city with around 100 types of the spirit, but guests can also choose from a wide variety of cocktails and craft beers.

Jake, 40, is hosting the launch of his new product at The Taproom bar at his Bedminster distillery, which will give whiskey lovers the opportunity to sample the whiskey, purchase bottles, starting at £49.50, buy gift packs with a 10 per cent discount and enjoy a range of specialist cocktails, food and live music.

Guests will not require tickets and the party will be free to attend, running from midday until 11pm on Saturday, November 13.
