Bristol Covid: the age group with rising proportion of cases as 85 'educational settings' report infections

An age group in Bristol is reporting a rise in its proportion of coronavirus cases, the latest figures released by the council show.

The update - released by Bristol City Council last night (February 15) - also shows key stats including case rate, Covid inpatients and workplace infections.

The report says 17 per cent of cases in Bristol are in the under-20 age group, 20 per cent in the 20-29 group, 48 per cent in the 30-59s and 15 per cent in the over-60s.

This means the proportion of cases being reported among the under-20s has risen by six per cent in the space of 11 days, with the council update from February 4 showing 11 per cent of cases were in that age group.

Since then, that figure has been rising - while the number of educational settings reporting at least one student or staff member with covid-19 has declined from 90 to 85.

The update also says: "At February 15, there are 228 people in our local hospitals who have tested positive for COVID-19. Our health and care systems remain under extreme pressure as a result of COVID-19 admissions, winter pressures and other urgent priorities.

"We continue to support the NHS with the vaccine rollout across Bristol, in line with the national prioritisation programme. From December 8 to February 7, 190,981 vaccines were administered across Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire."

The council update says that, as of February 10, a total of 32 workplaces were reported as managing cases of covid-19, together with 28 per cent of Bristol care homes having outbreaks or clusters.

The update also refers to the Bristol variant of covid, saying: "Bristol’s rate of 176 new cases per 100,000 population (data from February 3 to February 9), is lower than the previous seven days (229 new cases per 100,000).

"This reduction is reflected in all areas of the city. However, this is still a high level of infection. England’s infection rate is currently 168 new cases per 100,000.

"Cases of an adapted form of the UK COVID-19 variant first found in the east of England have been detected in the Bristol area.

"Additional community (surge) testing is now taking place to identify asymptomatic cases of the virus and support a better understanding of the way that the virus is behaving.

"Similar exercises are taking place across the country. Mobile testing units and Collect and Drop sites are now open to people who live in specific postcodes."

An earlier version of this story stated that overall cases had risen among under-20s by six per cent.

It has now been amended to make clear that the six per cent rise is in the proportion of cases among that age group relative to other ages.
