Bristol Covid latest: Five more deaths and 226 new cases recorded

Five new Covid-related deaths have been recorded in the Bristol region within the last 24 hours according to the latest figures.

The fatalities were confirmed as Public Health England's official figures published this evening (September 17) showed another 226 cases of coronavirus had been found across the Bristol area.

The deaths were in the City of Bristol, and South Gloucestershire.

It means there have now been 1,456 Covid-related deaths across the region.

Public Health England's official figures show that there have now been 122,933 cases of the virus in the region since the start of the pandemic.

The highest number of cases was found in the City of Bristol where 78 positive tests were returned.

The Government said a further 178 people had died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of Friday, bringing the UK total to 134,983.

Separate figures published by the Office for National Statistics show there have been 159,000 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

As of 9am on Friday, there had been a further 32,651 lab-confirmed Covid-19 cases in the UK, the Government said.

The total number of cases confirmed in each region around Bristol, with the daily rise in brackets, are as follows:

  • City of Bristol - 57,834 (+78)

  • North Somerset - 18,750 (+35)

  • South Gloucestershire - 29,235 (+42)

  • Bath and North East Somerset - 17,114 (+71)

The total number of deaths recorded in each region, with any increase in brackets, is as follows:

  • City of Bristol - 523 (+4)

  • North Somerset - 327 (-)

  • South Gloucestershire - 370 (+1)

  • Bath and North East Somerset - 236 (-)
