Bristol Covid latest as five more deaths recorded across the region

Another five lives have been lost to Covid in the Bristol region, latest figures have confirmed.

Four of the deaths were recorded in the city of Bristol, bringing the area's death toll to 547. The other death was in North Somerset, where there have been 341 Covid-related deaths since the start of the pandemic.

Meanwhile, 1,427 new cases of Covid-19 were detected across the region in the last 24 hours.

Government data published on Wednesday evening (October 20) show the virus is continuing to circulate locally.

In Bristol itself, there were 477 new cases of the virus recorded in the figures.

This compares to 308 in North Somerset, 378 in South Gloucestershire and 264 in Bath and North East Somerset.

The Government said a further 179 people had died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of Wednesday, bringing the UK total to 139,031.

Separate figures published by the Office for National Statistics show there have now been 164,000 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

As of 9am on Wednesday, there had been a further 49,139 lab-confirmed Covid-19 cases in the UK, the Government said.

The total number of cases confirmed in each region around Bristol since the pandemic began, with the daily rise in brackets, are as follows:

  • City of Bristol - 64,718 (+477)
  • North Somerset: 22,638 (+308)

  • South Gloucestershire - 33,816 (+378)
  • Bath and North East Somerset: 21,665 (+264)

Total daily increase: +1,427

The total number of deaths (within 28 days of a positive Covid test) recorded in each region are as follows:

  • City of Bristol - 547 (+4)
  • North Somerset: 341 (+1)

  • South Gloucestershire - 380 (no change)
  • Bath and North East Somerset: 240 (no change)

Total daily increase: +5
