Bristol Covid: Deadliest day since February 2021 amid record number of cases

Twelve people have died in the Bristol region after testing positive for Covid - the highest daily fatality figure since February 2021.

And after five days of Covid cases falling in Bristol, they have shot up once again today with nearly 2,000 new infections in the region today (Wednesday, December 12).

A total of 1,927 new Covid cases were confirmed in the Bristol region today, bringing the total since the start of the pandemic to 248,277 cases - nearly a quarter of a million.

There were also sadly 12 deaths today within 28 days of a positive test, bringing the region's total number of deaths to 1,675 since the pandemic began.

North Somerset saw a total of eight deaths within 28 days of a positive test today, while four more people were in Bristol. It marks Bristol's deadliest day since February 12, 2021, according to government data.

In the other nations, prevalence was estimated at one in 20, with Wales seeing infections jump week-on-week from around 157,900 people to 169,100, Scotland up from 238,000 to 297,400, and Northern Ireland up from 72,900 to 99,200.

All four nations saw a jump in infections, with prevalence of Covid-19 continuing to be highest in England, where around one in 15 people were estimated to have the virus – the equivalent of 3.7 million people, up from 3.3 million a week earlier.

The number of positive test results in each area since the pandemic began is recorded below, with new positive test results in brackets:

  • Bath and North East Somerset: 38,875 (+304)

  • City of Bristol: 108,389 (+783)
  • North Somerset: 40,405 (+339)

  • South Gloucestershire: 60,808 (+501)
