Bristol could see 'springtime temperatures' to welcome in 2020 with the city warmer than Rome this weekend

After a soggy and chilly Christmas, Bristol could see a much warmer start to the New Year.

Temperatures in the next week in parts of the UK could hit 15C – a figure not often seen until April or May, the Mirror Online reports.

The unseasonably warm weather is due to warm air being drawn up from the south, which will see Bristol faring better than its European counterparts.

Over the weekend temperatures in Rome are expected to hover around 9c and it is expected to be a chillier weekend in Athens – with the mercury rising to just 7c.

Temperatures in Bristol over the weekend are expected to climb to a balmy 12 or 13c.

The warmer weather comes after a soggy few weeks where Bristol has been battered by relentless rain, leading to issues with flooding.

The move to warmer temperatures to welcome in 2020 is due to high pressure over the UK, say Met Office forecasters.

Today is expected to be a dry but cloudy day with sunny spells and feeling mild with temperatures of 13c.

Tomorrow will be the same – cloudy with outbreaks of sunshine – with the best of the sunny spells expected in the afternoon with temperatures of around 12c.

The rest of the week is set to remain mild with sunny spells on Monday and light rain and drizzle on Tuesday clearing in the afternoon.

There is a further risk of outbreaks of rain on New Year’s Day.

Warmer weather in what is classed as the depths of winter is not an unusual thing.

On February 25 this year temperatures in parts of the UK topped a record 20C during a freak winter heatwave.
