Bristol coronavirus video in eight languages made as BME community make up third of all infected

A video featuring medics and education leaders speaking in eight different languages has been made to support communities across our city during the coronavirus pandemic.

Bristol Muslim Strategic Leadership Group created the film after figures showed the BME community made up around a third of all Covid-19 cases - both on the frontline and the general public - across the UK.

Spearheaded by speech and language therapist Weronika Ozpolat, she said research was underway to discover why minority ethnic groups are disproportionately falling ill to the deadly disease.

"We still don't know why," she said. "Quite a lot of people may not have access to the same information. Some people might not even have internet access. Three or four generations can generally live in the same house which also might be having an impact."

It's hoped the video will help promote crucial facts about the outbreak to all communities in Bristol.

"If the information is in their language it makes them feel like it's meant for them," said Mrs Ozpolat. "They feel more involved in the whole situation."

The video, which was made in partnership with Bristol NHS Clinical Commissioning Group, has now been shared far and wide across the country after being uploaded to Youtube.

"We've had lots of positive feedback," said Mrs Ozpolat. "People have been sharing the video and I think it's really helping."
