Bristol coronavirus: Nearly 500 new cases confirmed across region as second lockdown looms

There has been nearly 500 new cases of coronavirus reported across the Bristol region as the UK prepares for a second national lockdown.

The new cases reported by Public Health England came in the 24 hours up to 9am this morning (November 1).

The Bristol local authority area remains the area with the most new cases, with 240 more bringing the region's total since the start of the pandemic to just under 7,000.

South Gloucestershire has seen 126 new cases reported on the day an illegal rave consisting of up to 700 people was shut down by police in Yate.

The North Somerset and Bath and North East Somerset regions also saw over 50 new cases each, with 63 and 58 new positive tests reported respectively.

The UK will go back into a national lockdown on Thursday, but until then Bristol will continue to be subject to 'Tier 1 plus' measures that were put in place for the city earlier this week.

The new lockdown will last for four weeks, currently set to come to an end in early December.

The total number of people to have tested positive for COVID-19 across Bristol and its surrounding areas, as of 9am today (Sunday, November 1), with new cases in brackets, is as follows:

  • City of Bristol - 6,968 (+240)
  • South Gloucestershire - 2,948 (+126)
  • North Somerset – 2,066 (+63)
  • Bath and North East Somerset – 1,855 (+58)

There were 162 deaths recorded within 28 days of a positive COVID-19 test on Saturday, bringing the UK's total death toll to 46,717.

A total of 23,254 new infections were confirmed across the country as the number of people to have tested positive for coronavirus across the UK since March passed one million.
