Bristol coronavirus latest: 18 people die across region after contracting virus

A further 18 people have died after contracting coronavirus across Bristol and its neighbouring areas.

The Department of Health's latest data show deaths and infections remain high despite nearly a month of lockdown.

A total of 403 new cases were confirmed across the West of England over the past 24 hours.

Six people died in South Gloucestershire, where 68 new cases were recorded.

Five deaths were in Bath and North East Somerset, where 76 more infections were confirmed.

Four further people died in Bristol, as 191 new cases were reported in our city. This brought the city rate per 100,000 people to 305.8, down from 510 which was recorded earlier this month.

North Somerset recorded three deaths and 68 new cases - its Covid rates is now 238.1.

Data also shows that as of January 26, Bristol's hospitals had 419 Covid patients - down slightly from 430 confirmed on Tuesday, January 19.

The breakdown of new cases

The daily rise in cases for each part of the region is recorded below, with the total figure during the pandemic in brackets:

  • Bath and North East Somerset: +60 (7,259)

  • Bristol: +267 (26,397)

  • North Somerset: +79 (8,678)

  • South Gloucestershire: +140 (12,870)

The South West has the joint-highest coronavirus R rate in the country, according to the latest estimates.

Our region's reproductive number stands at 0.8 to 1.1, which means the disease is spreading faster across our area than most of the country.

It means that on average every 10 people who have contracted the virus could infect up to 11 others.
