Bristol considers public event to mourn victims of coronavirus outbreak

The council is considering holding a public event to mourn the losses that people have suffered during the coronavirus crisis.

Bristol Mayor Marvin Rees said he has been talking to faith leaders and others in the city about how to support citizens who have lost a loved one or experienced another form of loss as a result of the pandemic.

Many bereaved people will be grieving alone, in isolation, not having had the chance to hold a funeral, Mr Rees said during a Facebook Live on Wednesday evening (May 6).

Others will be mourning the loss of a job, a lost relationship or even the loss of hope and “a sense of purpose and dignity and self-esteem”.

“Loss at the moment will be a huge theme,” he said.

“We really want to do something as a city to recognise that, and maybe just kind of symbolically move us beyond loss into the beginning of recovery and restoration as well.

“We have been talking about doing some public event as a city - maybe online in the first instance, but as soon as we can come together, to do it together as a city.”

Commenting on Facebook as the mayor was speaking, Amanda Somers asked whether Bristol would have a “remembrance statue” in honour of those who died of Covid-19 in the city.

The South West is among the regions in England and Wales least affected by the virus so far.

But NHS figures released yesterday (May 6) show 167 people have died with Covid-19 in Bristol's hospitals.

Some 80 people died with the virus in care homes or elsewhere in the community between the start of the outbreak and April 24, according to ONS.
