Bristol City winger set for loan move to Swindon Town after Wycombe offer rejected - report

Jonny Smith is set for a loan move to Swindon Town in League One, according to a report.

The Robins winger excelled on loan at League Two Oldham last season, scoring nine goals and setting up six more in 28 appearances and is set to step up a league to join the newly promoted West Country side.

Smith is yet to make a senior appearance for Bristol City after loan moves at Cheltenham, Fylde, Tranmere and Oldham and looks set for another year without a game in the senior side, reports sports journalist Pete O'Rourke, and Bristol Live also understands that he is set for a fifth loan move in five years.

He signed for the club from Wrexham in 2016 but the 23-year-old has so far been void of opportunities.

Wycombe Wanderers had been interested in a permanent move for Smith, and put in a bid, however the bid was rejected by the Robins and he looks set to remain a City player.

He struggled for game time in his first loan move at Cheltenham, but played full seasons in his three loan spells after, racking up 130 senior appearances so far in his young career.

With Dean Holden appearing to prefer a formation without wingers, Smith's chances of breaking into the first team this summer look slim and he sits behind the likes of Callum O'Dowda and Niclas Eliasson in the pecking order.

A loan move would likely be beneficial as City continue to monitor his development and if he proves he can cut it League One, he may get more chances in the Championship in the coming seasons.
