Bristol City verdict: Finally the home formation, selection and performance as Huddersfield Town trashed

Bristol City made it eight games unbeaten at home on Saturday with a fourth home win of the season.

The comprehensive defeat of Huddersfield Town redressed the balance following a heavy midweek loss.

With a glut of goals scored, this was a morale-boosting performance to boot against the Terriers.

A tough test at Craven Cottage awaits next - though City go there with a good record of course - before the busy festive period begins and the halfway point of the season looms into view.

Oh how things look rosy after this win.

Lee Johnson gets it right

It was ludicrous that some Bristol City fans were seriously grumbling after the 4-1 loss to West Brom about the head coach.

We wrote on Thursday how some needed a reality check and to see the bigger picture. Johnson switched things up to 4-4-2 - as we've been calling for - and accommodated Niclas Eliasson to see a handsome win.

The tactics and performance were spot on and the Robins responded.

It was the best home display since beating West Brom last April and the first time five goals have been netted in the league since that 5-5 against Hull 18 months ago. Just rewards.

Cowley backs LJ

We asked Danny Cowley following the match what he made of the Robins and the Huddersfield boss explained just how highly he rates Lee Johnson.

Indeed, Cowley explained that the success of Johnson was making it harder for other managers as other clubs wish to replicate what Bristol City are doing.

Cowley also explained that criticism of Johnson after Wednesday's loss was unjustified and that Johnson was over-performing with his squad even.

In fact, he pointed out that Johnson and his coaching team are the real stars at Bristol City rather than any of the players.

Midfield magic

While Niclas Eliasson, making only his fourth league start of the campaign, was the pick of the bunch on Saturday,

Adam Nagy was outstanding at bringing the ball through midfield, while Josh Brownhill was terrific on the right creating and scoring a  goal.Han-Noah Massengo added energy and drive to the City side - making the most tackles in the game even - while Eliasson set up two goals and scored one himself. Kasey Palmer, Korey Smith and Callum O'Dowda have some task on their hands to regain first-team spots after this display.

"I thought Han-Noah Massengo was absolutely outstanding, I mean wow, what a player at 18-years-old," said Johnson of the central midfielder after the game, following explaining how judo is helping to toughen up Eliasson.

Hunt return huge positive

The returning full-back after a hamstring injury was another filip for Johnson. The former Owls defender combined well with Brownhill throughout and played significant parts in the first goal - as he crossed from the byline - and the third as he fed in Browhill to do likewise.

The bleached hair helped him catch the attention but it was also his near-faultless return to the first team that did likewise.

The hair? Apparently as part of his costume with the City players enjoying their Christmas Party on Saturday night after the Huddersfield game.

(Meanwhile, following the match Lee Johnson gave his advice to midfiedler Han-Noah Massengo, about to embark on his first night out (he is just 18): to not peak too early.)

Attack, attack, attack

Andi Weimann of Bristol City celebrates scoring a goal against Huddersfield (Rogan/JMP)

Only West Brom have scored more goals than Bristol City in the Championship this season.

What superb work by the team that is, with the Robins also the joint highest scorers on the road.

(with the on-loan striker again on the bench for Leeds United and Patrick Bamford netting for Marcelo Bielsa's side to surely retain his starting spot), arguably City must tighten up before finding a route to the net more often.

Huddersfield scored twice at Ashton Gate and could have got more on another day with the dangerous Karlan Grant missing several good opportunities to add to his first half goal.

While conceding on the road has become a problem of late, and only six other sides have a worse defensive record away from BS3. Something more to work on for Johnson and his staff.
