Bristol City U21 player ratings vs Coventry: Backwell shows promise in attack as defence falters

Harvey Wiles-Richards - 6

Had little chance with the opening two goals but made an important save on the stroke of half-time to prevent Coventry doubling their advantage. Made an even better save from a one-on-one to deny Obikwu's hat-trick but couldn't keep out the third.

Zac Bell - 6

Robust in the challenge and played more on the front foot in the second half. Looked sharp going forward but Coventry's threat in behind limited his presence up the pitch.

Harry Leeson - 5

Looked a little disjointed playing as a centre-back in a back four and found it difficult to go up against the strength of Obikwu who caused the defence problems all afternoon. Positive on the ball and in possession but left too much of a gap through the middle.

Duncan Idehen - 5

Involved in a great match-up alongside Obikwu but one in which the striker came out on top. Idehen misjudged a clearance allowing his opponent to beat him for Coventry's second. Lacked communication alongside Leeson with the forwards pulling them apart at times with their movement. Improved in the second half with some battling tackles and interceptions.

Callum Wood - 7

Composed on the ball, confident in taking on his opponents despite the risks. Rarely looked ruffled from a defensive showing. Some good crosses into the area to create chances.

Dylan Kadji (off 68, Rose) - 5

Man-marked by Coventry's Harrison Nee when City were in possession which made it difficult to influence the proceedings. Hasn't played for almost a month and there were a couple of heavy touches. Competitive in the tackle. More of a threat playing further forward and was at his best when charging into the area but lacked composure with his final ball.

Omar Taylor-Clarke - 6

A nifty piece of skill on the touchline showed his confidence having been involved in the first-team set-up. More involved in the second half with City pressing for an equaliser, showing intentions to pass the ball forward and ask probing questions.

Ben Acey (off 69, Yeboah) - 6

Played as the No10 behind the forwards and his clever movement by dropping back and linking up with Francois. Unlucky to have had an effort saved from the edge of the area. Dipped in and out of the game.

Marlee Francois (off 80, Thomas) - 7

Worked his way into some good positions on the left without being heavily involved. Assisted Backwell's equaliser with a smart pull-back across goal. A tricky customer when running inside the area but drifted in and out. Denied by a superb close-range save. Did his defensive duties well.

Tommy Backwell - 7

A surprising choice to lead the line, given he's usually in a deeper midfield role. Repaid the faith by scoring the equaliser from close range. Showed some really positive movement in the area which created plenty of half-chances.

Seb Palmer-Houlden - 7

A real thorn in Coventry's defence playing out on the right - gave Callum Perry a difficult afternoon with his pace and strength. Had a close-range strike brilliantly saved. Energy meant he was a nightmare to mark and remained a threat aerially. Spurned good chances when he could have done better.

Substitutes

Ephraim Yeboah (on 65, Acey) - 6

Added a threat in attack as City pushed for a way back into the game but didn't get his opportunity in front of goal.

Marley Rose (on 68, Kadji) - 6

Saw lots of the ball but couldn't provide the inspiration to get City back into the contest.

Olly Thomas (on 80, Francois) - N/A

Had a good chance towards the end but couldn't get the ball out of his feet.

Subs not used: Casa-Grande, Churchley
