Bristol City transfers: Ex-defender on trial in League One, Pigott's decision, Robins reunion

Nigel Pearson's Bristol City squad are busy sweating it out in the sun at Loughborough University as the Robins prepare to entertain Portsmouth in Tuesday's friendly.

Although Pearson appears to have the bulk of the squad he wants for the upcoming Championship campaign, City are still very much in the market for a striker to lead the line.

The Robins boss has also admitted that he may have to sell first before he can buy which means the search for a striker could go on deep into the window.

Here is the latest transfer news concerning Bristol City players past and present ...

Harper on trial

Former Bristol City left-back Vince Harper is on trial at League One Cheltenham Town following his release at Ashton Gate.

Harper was a regular for the City Under-23s but never made a first-team appearance and his departure was confirmed in March, before Nigel Pearson had even accepted the manager's job on a permanent basis.

But the 20-year-old played for Michael Duff's Robins in their 3-0 pre-season defeat to Birmingham City and is also scheduled to feature against Kidderminster Harriers on Tuesday.

"We are exhausting every avenue, working really hard and I thought Vincent did really well in the game," Duff told Gloucestershire Live. "There are lots of plates spinning at the minute, as there always is. We are just hoping for a couple to drop."

Pigott's decision

Joe Pigott has revealed Paul Cook's personal plan for him helped bring him to Portman Road despite interest in his services from "all over".

As first reported by Bristol Live, Pigott was one of a number of strikers being considered by the Robins recruitment team as his contract at AFC Wimbledon expired and the club had held talks with the frontman.

However, the 27-year-old was not top of City's shortlist and that's perhaps evidenced by the fact he's stayed in League One, albeit with a lucrative contract at Ipswich.

"We had two good chats. He said he's going to be really hard on me, which is probably what I need. I'm looking forward to it," Pigott told the East Anglian Daily Times.

"It's just a fresh challenge. Obviously, everyone knows the challenge ahead and I'm really looking forward to it. It's a massive club and I just can't wait for the start of the season."

Keogh joins Blackpool

Blackpool's line up at Ashton Gate for Bristol City's season-opening Championship clash should have a familiar face in it after Richard Keogh completed a free transfer to the Seasiders.

Keogh spent last season at Huddersfield following his messy exit at Derby County, in which he was awarded £2.3m over breach of contract, and has now signed a one-year contract at Bloomfield Road.

The 34-year-old, who made 53 appearances for City from 2005-2008, is Blackpool's eighth signing of the summer.

"He will bring valuable experience to the group, having played the vast majority of his career in the Championship," Blackpool boss Neil Critchley said. "He’s a good communicator, leader and footballer who can pass on his knowledge to the rest of the group."
