Bristol City transfer rumours: Championship club make offer for Jonny Smith

Wycombe Wanderers have made an offer for Bristol City winger Jonny Smith, according to a report from Football Insider.

Smith spent the 2019/20 season on loan at League Two side Oldham Athletic and impressed with his performances.

The winger’s contract at Ashton Gate is set to expire in 2021, though, meaning his future with the Robins is in doubt, with just months to go.

The Chairboys have just been promoted to the Championship after a play-off final win last month, and are looking at Smith to bolster their squad.

The report states that Gareth Ainsworth’s side have already tabled a bid for the 23-year-old, who is yet to make a first-team appearance for the Robins despite being at the club since 2016.

Once signed, the Liverpool-born winger was loaned out to Cheltenham Town, then AFC Fylde, Tranmere Rovers and finally Oldham.

Smith had 15 goal contributions - nine goals and six assists - in 28 League Two appearances for the Latics last season.

An offer for Smith may prove an attractive one for City, who need to offload players in order to get the size of their squad down.

Smith is also unlikely to get into Dean Holden’s side ahead of fellow wingers Callum O’Dowda and Jamie Paterson, plus Niclas Eliasson should the Swede remain at Ashton Gate. While the new Robins head coach's desire to play a 3-5-2 could also limit his potential gametime.
