Bristol City to meet Swindon Town in first game since M4 Derby of 2015

Bristol City have announced that they will play Swindon Town in a pre-season friendly on Saturday (29 August).

The Robins were due to play Portsmouth originally, however the South Coast side have pulled forward their Carabao Cup game against Stevenage to this coming weekend instead, cancelling the match against Dean Holden's team.

And instead City will now face League Two champions Swindon Town in a pre-season match-up, following playing Aston Villa in South Wales on Wednesday afternoon.

The League Two champions head to Ashton Gate, in what will be the first M4 derby between the two teams - albeit in a friendly fixture - since April 2015.

Kieran Agard, Joe Bryan and Aaron Wilbraham were all on the scoresheet on the evening of 7 Aprill 2015 as City closed in on the League One title of that unforgettable double-winning 2014/15 campaign, with Aden Flint's memorable "no, no, no" comments following the televised encounter that year.

Richie Wellens’ Robins however won the fourth tier in the 2019/20 campaign, via a points-per-game finish in June, after the League Two campaign was curtailed due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The forthcoming game will be played behind closed doors due to existing regulation, while no viewable stream has been announced for the game so far.

City are due to play their first competitive game a week later: a Carabao Cup first round tie against Exeter City.

Meanwhile the club has received criticism from some fans over the announcement that the forthcoming League Cup game will cost £10 to watch - even for season card holders who are unable to attend matches at Ashton Gate currently.

No refund options have been announced concerning new season matches so far and all EFL clubs are eagerly watching on to see how several test events pan out as low-capacity crowds are monitored at some matches.

Supporters can follow all the action from City’s Carabao Cup tie with the Grecians on Robins TV, with the club saying that there will be exclusive matchday coverage taking place from 1.30pm ahead of the 2pm kick-off.
