Bristol City starlet pens new deal as new loan move is considered

Bristol City have announced that attacking midfielder Rory Holden has signed a new deal to remain in BS3.

The summer 2017 deadline day signing - who was announced at the same time as Tyreeq Bakinson - has penned a new two-year contract, with the club confirming that an option year exists too.

Holden made 12 appearances for Rochdale in League One last season and is highly rated at City.

We understand that a new loan will be arranged for the coming season if a club can be found to take the Northern Ireland U21 international.

Head coach Lee Johnson recently made reference to Holden in a radio interview, explaining that the talented young player, 21, may take a while to fulfil his promise and that he does not want to block the former Derry City player’s route to the first team.

"Bobby Reid was an example of that [players who surprise you] because he was such a late developer, players like Rory Holden for example who’s out on loan at Rochdale, Rory’s 21 but really he’s probably 18 in terms of physical development so who knows what he’s going to come back like," said Johnson.

"I don’t want to restrict that by buying two or three in a position and all of a sudden Rory is surprise to requirements."

The energetic forward who impressed in Marbella last summer has also spent time on loan at Vanarama National League Barrow.

Holden began his career at the Candystripes before signing for the Robins in the summer of 2017 after a successful trial.
