Bristol City set their sights on signing Cardiff City defender Greg Cunningham — reports

Bristol City are reportedly interested in signing former player Greg Cunningham from Cardiff City.

The defender endured a nightmare year last season, in which he started brightly on loan at Blackburn Rovers before suffering a horrible ACL injury to rule him out for the rest of the campaign.

Cunningham, 29, has found himself behind first-choice left-back Joe Bennett at Cardiff City Stadium and that is likely to be the pecking order when the season begins this weekend.

But, according to Football Insider, the Republic of Ireland international is the subject of increasing transfer interest from his former employers across the Severn.

Cunningham joined Bristol after leaving Manchester City and spent three years there between 2012 and 2015, making 107 appearances.

The report claims Robins manager Dean Holden is keen to add defensive reinforcements in the transfer window and view Cunningham as an affordable option who would come with great Championship experience.

For the Bluebirds, that would leave them with just one senior left back in Bennett, while 19-year-old Joel Bagan is viewed as a promising prospect by those at the club. Whether he is ready for Championship football, however, is another question all together.

Manager Neil Harris has said Cardiff will now be operating a one in, one out transfer policy, which would likely mean they would be in the market for another player should Cunningham leave for regular first-team action.

The defender has made nine appearances for the Welsh capital city club since his £4m move from Preston in 2018.
