Bristol City's play-off rivals Preston North End dealt blow with Alex Neil set to leave for Stoke City

Bristol City's play-off rivals Preston North End have been dealt a huge blow with the news that Alex Neil is set to join Stoke City.

Preston boss Neil turned down interest from West Brom to stay at Deepdale over the summer, but now looks set to move to the Bet 365 Stadium.

The Potters yesterday parted company with Nathan Jones following a dismal start to the season that has seen them lose 10 out of 14 matches.

Yet TalkSPORT claim that they have convinced Neil to take charge.

After challenging for the play-offs last season, Neil has led Preston to third in the Championship table, two places above the Robins on goal difference.

Losing the Scot will be a huge blow to North End, as he has been inspirational in guiding them to challenge in the Championship.

He has been in charge of Preston since 2017, having previously managed Norwich City and Hamilton Academical.

His departure could well pave the way for former Bristol City defender David Moyes to return to Preston, the club he first made his name at as a manager.
