Bristol City's Lee Johnson banned from the touchline for return to former club Barnsley

Bristol City boss Lee Johnson will not be in the dugout when the Robins take on his former side Barnsley in front of the TV cameras on Friday night.

Johnson has admitted the prior FA charge for breaking rule E3 during the recent 3-0 loss at Kenilworth Road.

And as well as picking up a fine, the City boss has been slapped with a one-match ban, as Johnson will be banished to the stands for his return to his former side.

It'll be over to assistant head coaches Jamie McAllister and Dean Holden for the upcoming match, with Bristol City looking to grab a win that will send them into the automatic places in the league, for at least a few hours before everyone else plays their matchday 15 games.

Bristol Live asked Johnson about the incident on Sunday and the head coach gave his opinion.

"Yes, I know what it’s for. It’s harsh, let me tell you. It’s for, well you saw what it was for, it says what it was for," he said.

"It wasn’t that bad. If you’re talking about scaling it, it definitely didn’t question integrity and I’m a bit of a bird watcher so I shouted a name in mid-air that was potentially looking at a bird called a blue tit that was on top of the Luton stand and I think it got misconstrued that it was aimed at the referee," he added.

The full tweeted statement from the FA read:

"Lee Johnson has been fined £2,000 and banned from the touchline for one match with immediate effect.

"The Bristol City head coach admitted that his language towards a match official on the field of play at the end of the EFL Championship game against Luton Town on 19 October 2019 was abusive and/or insulting and/or improper."
