Bristol City's Championship rivals Sheffield Wednesday face EFL investigation after stadium sale following Derby County controversy

Sheffield Wednesday are the latest club to be contacted by the EFL over the sale of their stadium.

The Times report that the EFL have contacted the Owls to question why the £38m profit made from the sale of Hillsborough was detailed in their 2018 accounts but not documented by the Land Registry until 12 months later.

It is the latest in a long-running saga of clubs selling their stadium to their owners to record profits, with Derby County's sale of Pride Park to owner Mel Morris also proving to be controversial.

There is set to be an EFL clubs meeting tomorrow, which could prove tense due to the issue, with an escalating row between Derby and Middlesbrough over the sale of Pride Park.

Wednesday's accounts show that, for the period ending July 31, there was a £38,061,000 "profit on disposal of stadium".

Yet documents filed with the Land Registry show the transaction, by a company owned solely by Owls chairman Dejphon Chansiri, only took place three months ago.

With Sheffield Wednesday and Derby County both looking to challenge for the play-offs this season, the outcome of any EFL investigation could have ramifications in Bristol City's race for the top six.

Any club that loses more than £39m in a three-year period can face a heavy fine or points deduction, which saw Birmingham City plunge from play-off hopefuls into a relegation battle at the end of last season.

Wednesday's £38m profit on their stadium meant they recorded a profit of £2.5m for 2017/18 when, without it, they would have suffered losses of £35.4m, which follows losses of £30.5m for the previous two years.

Middlesbrough have previously threatened to sue Derby over the sale of Pride Park.

Boro chairman Steve Gibson has an ally in Robins owner Steve Lansdown, with the two clubs strictly sticking to FFP rules in the past.
