Bristol City respond to allegations of racist chanting by 'fans' at Luton Town

A group of 'Bristol City fans' have been condemned by the club following allegations they engaged in racist chanting at Saturday’s away match against Luton Town.

The Robins lost 3-0 to the Hatters but during the match at Kenilworth Road it is alleged a small group of away fans sang chants of a racist nature towards the home supporters.

Some 1,100 fans attended the game to support City but plenty were active afterwards in pointing out the singing after the result.

One fan even complained about being punched by a fellow Bristol City supporter when disagreeing with the inappropriate songs.

The embarrassment comes on the same day an FA Cup match between Yeovil Town and Haringey Borough was abandoned amid claims Haringey goalkeeper Valery Pajetet had been subjected to racism from supporters in the away end.

Earlier this week several Bulgarian fans were arrested for racist chanting as England played a Euro 2020 qualifier.

Supporters also tagged several members of the club on social media following the game to alert Bristol City to the events.

The club has roundly condemned the behaviour of a minority of fans and has urged the incidents to be reported.

Bristol City responded with the following statement: "We naturally condemn any form of abuse or racist language.

"We are a family club which celebrates its diversity and inclusivity and will take action against anyone behaving in a racist manner at a Bristol City match who has purchased their ticket or season card through the club as well as reporting them to the relevant authorities.

"Anyone wanting to report inappropriate behaviour can do so through slo@bcfc.co.uk"

Several supporters contacted Bristol Live after the game to complain about the events. “It was utterly embarrassing - especially after the events on Monday,” one City supporter at the game said.

“There was loads of unrest in the travelling supporters - and elements of racism,” they confirmed. “I saw a woman leave in tears after being abused."
