Bristol City release their new squad numbers - with room for an incoming defender

Bristol City have announced their new squad numbers for the 2020/21 season - with new signing Chris Martin given the number 7 shirt, last worn by former captain Korey Smith.

The 31-year-old forward is unable to take the no.9 shirt, traditionally worn by a club's leading striker, because Famara Diedhiou continues with that number. Another sign that Diedhiou is staying in BS3?

Elsewhere Nahki Wells remains with 21 while Daniel Bentley retains the no.1 jersey - with neither Ashley Williams or Niki Maenpaa listed. The end looks to be nigh for both.

However, the missing numbers may show that there is room for an addition or two. The vacant no.5 shirt hints that there is room for another centre-back to come in and replace Ashley Williams, with namesake Joe operating this season at 20.

And with no 15 there is also space for another right wing-back to provide competition to Jack Hunt. Steven Sessegnon or Pedro Pereira could yet be that squad number this season.

Elsewhere, an intriguing name on the list is Ryley Towler - a Bristol City academy graduate who could appear at some point this season, with the Robins handing him shirt number 34.

Towler caught our eyes a couple of years ago playing for Mangotsfield School in the Woodcock Shield juniors football competition, and the central midfielder/defender looks to be another young City academy talent with a bright future.
