Bristol City release former Swindon Town and Portsmouth defender after trial

Bristol City will not be pursuing a deal for Nathan Thompson.

The defender played for the Robins' under-23s team at Yeovil Town in a pre-season friendly at the weekend and manager Lee Johnson confirmed the club were having a look at the player.

It did not exactly go down well with Robins fans, with Thompson having come through the youth system at their fierce rivals Swindon Town.

Thompson went on to play over 150 games for Swindon before he joined Portsmouth two years ago.

Speaking about the decision not to sign Thompson, Johnson said the player was not the right fit.

He said: "He came in for couple of days, trained but we just didn’t think it was right. He has a lot of interest elsewhere."

Reacting to the news on Twitter, Robins supporters seemed pleased.

Dave Evans: Best bit of business in this entire transfer window.

Jamie: Wonder if LJ will try to get in a loan for a right-back or just hopes Vyner will continue to improve.
