Bristol City player ratings vs Manchester City: Kalas and Williams superb in hard-fought defeat

Max O'Leary - 6

No chance with the opening goal. Made a good save low down to deny Alvarez in the second half but again, had little chance with Foden's second goal and beaten by a brilliant De Bruyne strike.

George Tanner (off 45, Weimann) - 6

A learning curve for the young full-back who was left exposed by both Foden and Bernardo Silva at times. Played too far apart from Vyner and Man City were able to exploit the space between them. Can hold his head high, however.

Zak Vyner - 7

Started the game nervously and almost made two errors in the first half, including losing possession while going on a mazy run forward. Frustrated at half-time after being isolated but looked more assured in the second half with Sykes to his right.

Tomas Kalas - 8

Showed all his know-how with a handful of brilliantly timed tackles inside the area and made a goalline clearance. A man mountain at the back - amazing to think this is just his second start of the season.

Cam Pring (off 77, Dasilva) - 7

A really tough task up against Mahrez. Threw himself in front of Dias' strike to prevent Man City from doubling their lead. Matched his opposition for pace on the flank and showed attacking intent when he could.

Joe Williams (off 88, Taylor-Clarke) - 8

A player in great form at the moment and he continued that once again. His energy was so beneficial to helping out City's backline but was also able to contribute to the numbers going forward.

Matty James (off 89, King) - 7

An almost impossible task in keeping De Bruyne quiet but showed his experience sitting deep and dropping into the back four when needed. Tried to get as close as possible to Bernardo on his touch but Man City were just too quick and too good at times.

Alex Scott - 8

Lived up to his billing against world-class opponents. Instrumental in everything going forward breaking through the lines. Glides around the pitch, skipping past Lewis and Phillips. Certainly didn't look out of place...

Alex Scott wins the ball deep in Man City's half (Robbie Stephenson/JMP)

Sam Bell - 7

Could have given City a dream start when his early effort deflected wide of the right post. Looked the most likely to create something on the left with his pace. City were targeting that diagonal pass to get him behind and it troubled the Premier League champions.

Had a header agonisingly fall wide of the post that would have brought the hosts level.

Nahki Wells (off 83, Francois) - 6

Couldn't generate himself a goalscoring opportunity and was given the thankless task of attempting to close and chase down Man City's defenders. Worked his absolute socks off.

Mark Sykes - 7

Should have won a penalty in the first-half when he was clumsily bundled from behind. Moved to right-back in the second half and made a crucial interception against Alvarez.

Substitutes

Andi Weimann (on 45, Tanner) - 7

Added another dimension to City's attack on his introduction and almost assisted Bell with a superb cross from the right.

Jay Dasilva (on 77, Pring) - N/A

Marlee Francois (on 83, Wells) - N/A

Omar Taylor-Clarke (on 88, Williams) - N/A

Andy King (on 89, James) - N/A
