Bristol City manager shoots down Liverpool links amid crucial WSL relegation battle

Bristol City Women interim manager Matt Beard insists there's "no truth" in stories linking him with the vacant managerial post at Liverpool.

The Athletic reported on Thursday that former West Ham boss Beard is finalising a contract at Liverpool and will take over at the Championship club following the conclusion of the 2020/21 season.

Beard was appointed in January with Tanya Oxtoby on maternity leave and has taken charge of 21 matches as Bristol City, including their run to the WSL Cup final where they were beaten 6-0 by Chelsea.

The Vixens are battling to stay in the top-flight, bottom of the division and one point from safety with two remaining games against Manchester United and Brighton & Hove Albion.

Speaking ahead of Sunday's match at Twerton Park, Beard responded "no comment" to questions surrounding the Liverpool job before adding, "I'm maternity cover for Tanya. There's no truth in the story anyway, but it is what it is, I can't change that."

A Bristol City Women spokesperson had earlier said: "Matt Beard is fully focused on the two remaining Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixtures and fully committed to retaining the club's top-flight status."

Liverpool insist the process of appointing a new manager remains ongoing with Amber Whiteley having taken charge of the team following the departure of Vicki Jepson in January.

The Athletic report claims Beard has been selected ahead of Whiteley and another unnamed WSL head coach to land the job on Merseyside.
