Bristol City look for loan club for Max O'Leary with Rene Gilmartin added to goalkeeper ranks

Bristol City are set to announce the signing of Rene Gilmartin as the goalkeeper leaves Colchester United following the the end of his contract.

And it will mean that the Robins are able to look for a loan club to take upcoming talent Max O'Leary for the season ahead.

O'Leary was recently called up to the Republic of Ireland squad and the talented 22-year-old also made 14 starts in the Championship last campaign for the Robins.

But the arrival of the experienced Rene Gilmartin - official confirmation is expected from the club imminently - will allow for the possible departure of O'Leary if a suitable club can be found that will give the Republic of Ireland call-up a season of first-team football to improve on various aspects of his game.

Bristol City goalkeeper Max O'Leary heads clear

With Daniel Bentley having been announced as joining up at Ashton Gate on Friday night on a four-year deal, and the good form of Niki Maenpaa last campaign, O'Leary's chances of securing the number one shirt are much reduced.

And Gilmartin, 32, will add a further experienced option at the back for head coach Lee Johnson to call on for the campaign ahead should Maenpaa and Bentley be both unavailable.

Any agreed deal for O'Leary will include the possibility of a recall in January should it be needed.

Forest Green Rovers have previously shown an interest in the player but the Robins will try to find a club in League One or even at Championship level.

Head of player loans Brian Tinnion successfully placed Zak Vyner at Rotherham United previously and it may be that the club looks to send O'Leary to a side that they have already have good links with.

Meanwhile, Bristol City are due to announce the signings of Tommy Rowe and Tomas Kalas in the next days too.
