Bristol City linked with experienced international midfielder available for free - report

Bristol City are being linked with experienced central midfielder James Morrison who is out of contract this summer.

The former West Bromwich Albion man was not offered a new deal after the season ended and is now reportedly interesting three Championship sides.

Morrison made 341 appearances for the Baggies after signing up at the Hawthorns in 2007 and is now in the sights of Reading, Bristol City and Blackburn Rovers, according to Sky Sport's Keith Downie.

Should the Robins win the race for his signature then the experienced midfield campaigner could add some vital experience to the middle of the pitch for a Bristol City side intent on challenging for promotion next season.

Such a move, if it comes off, would be reminiscent of head coach Lee Johnson bringing in Gary O'Neil on a free in the summer of 2016 to help add some knowhow to the Robins midfield.

First-team football could be crucial in the chase for the former Middlesbrough man, however. And while City are well stocked in central midfield with Marlon Pack, Josh Brownhill, Liam Walsh and Joe Morrell, the 33-year-old Morrison and 46-cap Scotland international could add valuable depth to City.

Blackburn Rovers may fancy their chances of recruiting the ex-England U21 player, too, however, with boss Tony Mowbray reportedly a big fan and having initially signed Morrison 12 years ago for the Baggies.

In fact, Mowbray is also reported to have attended Morrison's testimonial dinner at the Hawthorns earlier this year, indicating the strength of relationship between the pair.

Given last year's Championship performances, Reading might be the outsiders in the race.

Meanwhile, Bristol City are due to play Derby County while on tour in the US this summer.
