Bristol City legend a free agent after being released by League One club

Aaron Wilbraham is on the lookout for a new club after League One side Rochdale confirmed the veteran forward will not have his contract renewed for next season.

Wilbraham, part of Bristol City's 2014/15 promotion-winning squad whose impact went beyond his goals and form on the pitch, is among a group of eight players being let go by Dale, following the curtailment of the 2019/20 season.

Wilbraham moved to Spotland in 2018 from Bolton Wanderers and made 48 appearances for the club, scoring eight goals and celebrated his 40th birthday last October.

In a statement Rochdale indicated that the decision to let so many leave, is due to the financial impact of Covid-19. Top scorer Ian Henderson is one of the eight as Rochdale admit they couldn't agree on new terms with the 35-year-old.

"Due to the current circumstances surrounding COVID-19 and the uncertainty of when we will return to playing football in front of crowds, it has been decided by the Board of Directors in conjunction with the Manager, Brian Barry-Murphy, not to offer new contracts to the above players who have been released," the statement said.

"The Club will also not be entering into contract negotiations with free agents until the future of the 2020/21 season is made clearer."

It's unclear if Wilbraham will be seeking a 12th club of his career, having made his debut for Stockport County during the 1997/98 season and with the financial landscape of the EFL so uncertain, he may have to bide his time.

Wilbraham remains a beloved figure in Bristol due to his influence on Steve Cotterill's double-winners as he finished top scorer in the 2014/15 campaign and his leadership and presence in the dressing room proved a vital ingredient for success.

He scored 34 goals in 125 appearances for the Robins over three seasons before leaving in 2017.
