Bristol City leading chase for Leeds' in-demand defender Barry Douglas

Bristol City are leading the hunt for Leeds’ former Scotland international Barry Douglas.

Douglas has not been offered a new contact by Leeds and will become a free agent on July 1.

City are keen on the left-back and there is interest in him from the EFL, Scotland, Turkey and the United States.

Douglas, 31, helped Leeds win promotion in 2020, but failed to make a single appearance for them in the Premier League as Marcelo Bielsa opted instead for Stuart Dallas or Ezgjan Alioski at left-back.

His last appearance for Leeds was in September against Hull City in the EFL Cup.

Douglas, who won his only Scotland cap in 2018, then joined Blackburn and enjoyed a fine season with Rovers, making 31 appearances.

Rovers boss Tony Mowbray ruled out signing Douglas permanently when he bought promising left-back Harry Pickering from Crewe in January.

The Robins are keen on Douglas because of his experience and proven track record at winning promotion from the Championship.

As well as Leeds, he also helped Wolves win promotion to the top fight under Nuno Espírito Santo in 2018.

During a colourful career, Douglas also won the Polish title in 2015 during his three years with Lech Poznan and the Turkish Cup in 2017 during his one season with Konyaspor.

Rangers and Celtic have also been linked with the former Dundee United defender and would prefer to stay in Britain because of his young family.

He would love the chance to stay in the Championship and attempt to make it a hat-trick of promotions.

Douglas’ departure leaves Leeds without a specialist left-back and signing one is a priority for director of football Victor Orta.

Orta has gone though a list of possible targets and is understood to have cooled on Stade Brest’s Romain Perraud.

Leeds are believed to have been offered Lyon’s Ivory Coast international Maxwel Cornet, but not at the £20million asking price being quoted.
