Bristol City join Leeds United in race to sign Coventry City defender - report

Bristol City are set to rival Leeds United for the signature of Coventry City centre-back Michael Rose, according to a report.

The Scottish defender joined Coventry from Ayr United this season and has gone on to make 31 appearances for the Sky Blues as Mark Robins side won the League One title.

He has impressed at St Andrew's and the ball playing defender is now gaining Championship attention.

It was reported in the week that Leeds United were chasing Rose, but now Football Insider report that Bristol City will join Leeds in the race for the former Aberdeen centre-back.

Bristol City are likely to be in the market for a centre-back in the summer. Ashley Williams' contract is coming to an end this season and he could be shown the exit door come the end of the campaign.

He has been handed a short term deal to last until the end of the season but then could leave Ashton Gate. Filip Benkovic is also likely to leave the Robins come the end of the season.

The defender is most likely in Brendan Rodgers' plans for the future and would cost a small fortune to sign so City will have vacancies in the centre-back spot come the summer.

A move for Rose does make sense, but with Leeds United likely to be promoted automatically City have some serious competition for Rose.

Leeds will likely lose Ben White this summer as he returns to Brighton and Gaetano Berardi is set to leave, so Rose will have a choice to make if he wants to leave Coventry.

However Leeds have been linked with Middlesbrough's Daniel Ayala and Tottenham defender Juan Foyth, so if they decide to pursue deal for these players instead of Rose, City could be in pole position.

The Robins have nine games left of their Championship campaign as they push for the play offs, but money will be tight this summer and City will only be able to spend money if they sell first.
