Bristol City join Blackburn Rovers in chase for Leeds United and Scotland left-back

Nigel Pearson is eager to lure Scotland international Barry Douglas to Bristol City, according to reports.

The Leeds United left-back will be a free agent at the end of the month, and he isn't short of options as his three-year stint at Elland Road comes to an end.

The 31-year-old spent last season on loan at Blackburn Rovers, making 30 appearances in the Championship.

The player has said he is open to permanent switch to Ewood Park, but Sky Sports reports the Robins are among several other clubs mulling a move for for the former Wolverhampton Wanderers, Lech Poznan and Konyaspor defender.

Left back is a priority position for City following the release of Tommy Rowe.

The Robins have youngsters Cam Pring and George Nurse on the books, but Jay Dasilva is the only proven Championship player in that position at Pearson's disposal as it stands.

Douglas, a one-time Scotland international with plenty of experience in Britain and abroad, would be a solid and trusty addition – with two Championship winner's medals to his name – to a City squad in need of a huge rebuild after more than a dozen players were released this summer.

The report indicates there is also interest from Istanbul Basaksehir, Turkish champions in 2019/20, and from the MLS, but the player has admitted a move abroad would be "difficult" for his young family.

Douglas started his career with Queen's Park in Scotland, followed by a move to Dundee United in the SPL.

The defender moved to the Polish Ekstraklasa in 2013 and spent three seasons in Poznan, followed by a two-year stint in Turkey with Konyaspor.

Nuno Espirito Santo brought Douglas back to the UK in 2017 and he was a key figure in Wolves' promotion to the top flight.

He then joined Marcelo Bielsa's Leeds for £3million, winning the Championship title at Elland Road at the second attempt, but he has not played for Leeds in the Premier League and was loaned to Blackburn for the season in October 2020.
