Bristol City have an exciting future ahead says club owner Steve Lansdown

Bristol City owner Steve Lansdown says he is happy but my no means satisfied with the club’s eighth place finish in the Championship having been in the play-off positions for much of the season.

The good news for fans is he wants more and better next season after coming up just short of the play-offs in 2018/19.

But it effectively came down to the last day of the season having finish 11th in 2017/18, 17th in 2016/17 and 18th in 2015/16. The season before that the club were promoted as League One champions.

He said: “What we’re trying to do is create that sustainable build, keep progressing and build on what we have done before.

“The main aim was to finish higher than last season and we’ve done that well with some really good football,” Lansdown said talking to BCTV.

In fact the eighth place finish in the second tier of English football is the club’ highest league finish since 2008.

With a new training facility in the works, Mr Lansdown was quick to praise the recruitment and development work done by Robins head coach Lee Johnson and his coaching team especially after the club sold arguably their three best players from the previous season in Aden Flint, Bobby Reid and Joe Bryan.

“Our recruitment has been good after we lost a number of players last summer and people thought that would end any chances we had - but that happens in football,” said Mr Lansdown.

“Players want to move on and we traded well, we got good prices for them, we reinvested back into the squad and it has done well this year.

“Recruitment is good, of course we can improve on everything we do, the point is that we never stand still. The Academy is showing its worth, we have stability around the first team which is emanating through the club. We’re looking to build and build and there’s an exciting future out there.

“We’ve seen our younger players come into the first team again; Lloyd Kelly has stepped up, Max O’Leary has made his mark and Joe Morrell has played his part, Antoine (Semenyo) as well, so we’ve seen the development side of the club, which is so important to us going forward.”
