Bristol City handed huge injury boost ahead of trip to Stoke City as Adam Nagy starts for Hungary

Adam Nagy is inching closer to a Bristol City return after being named in Hungary's starting XI for their Euro 2020 qualifier against Slovakia in Budapest.

Nagy hasn't played since August 17 after injuring his ankle during the first-half against QPR in which he opened his goalscoring account for the Robins with a well-taken volley.

The midfielder had been walking in a protective boot to aid his rehabilitations but once he was called up by Hungary coach Marco Rossi earlier this month it was clear he was approaching full fitness.

Nagy didn't feature in the 2-1 friendly defeat to Montenegro last Thursday, instead remaining in Hungary to undergo further assessments, but after proving his fitness to Rossi has been named in Rossi's midfield for the match at the Groupama Arena.

Hungary are top of Group E, level on points with Croatia and three points above Wales, with the top two qualifying for the European Championships next summer.

Part of the reason for his motivation to move to Ashton Gate from Bologna over the summer was the opportunity to play in England and maintain his profile in the international set-up ahead of Euro 2020 after a season of frustration and few opportunities in Serie A.

If Nagy emerges from the contest in Budapest unscathed, he should return for Lee Johnson's squad for the Championship encounter at Stoke City on Saturday.

Han-Noah Massengo has impressed throughout Nagy's absence at the base of the Robins midfield alongside captain Josh Brownhill, but the expectation was always that the 18-year-old will make way for the Hungarian once he returned to fitness.

Nagy has been exceptional at keeping the ball and using it quickly and efficiently in the middle of the park and his 94 per cent pass completion ranks second in the Championship, albeit after only two appearances.
