Bristol City handed boost following Andi Weimann's injury scare on international duty

Bristol City have been handed a fitness boost following Andi Weimann's leg injury sustained against France last week with the Austrian international expected to return to the Robins High Performance this week and train as normal.

The forward, who limped out of the 2-0 Nations League loss on Thursday in the 50th minute, was named as an unused substitute in Austria's game against Croatia on Sunday after manager Ralf Rangnick initially confirmed he was a doubt.

The fact that Weimann, 31, featured in the squad represents reassuring news that his injury is not too serious. He was further pictured warming up before the contest with strapping to his left knee. Bristol Live understands that although it's unclear what the exact issue is, Weimann suffered some swelling to his leg and was left out of the Croatia defeat as a precaution.

He will now return to BS3 where he will continue training as normal although is expected to be monitored by City's physios ahead of Saturday's league contest with Queen Parks Rangers at Ashton Gate. Although, at present, there's no major concern that Weimann will be forced to miss the visit of Michael Beale's side.

Bristol City's Player of the Year last season has played in every minute bar one of the 10 league matches this season having contributed three goals and four assists. Any injury concerns, particularly to the knee, will be magnified following his ACL injury picked up two campaigns ago.

On the back of 22 goals last season, Weimann has remained integral to Nigel Pearson's plans and their high-intensity, attacking play. The manager will want him fit and firing ahead of a hectic fixture schedule including eight games in 29 days from Saturday.

There are 12 matches on the calendar before the three-week World Cup break on November 13 where Weimann will be handed the opportunity to recuperate with Austria failing to qualify for the tournament in Qatar.

Pearson will be keeping his fingers crossed that Antoine Semenyo will also return to the club fit and healthy following his international exploits. The striker appeared as a substitution against Brazil last week for Ghana and play one final match against Nicaragua on Tuesday evening.
